Meet our Picayune Item Jr. Reporter Zack Newton

PICAYUNE — Zack Newton is a Senior this year at Picayune Memorial High School, where he serves as Senior Class and Student Council President. He is the State Parliamentarian for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and has been active in school chapter for the past four years. He is a three year member of Newspaper Staff (Tidelines), where he is serving his second year as editor.

Newton is a member of the National Honor Society, Hugh O' Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) ambassador and Junior Staff.

Outside of school you can find in teaching as a Certified Instructor at Picayune Taekwondo. He is a 3rd Degree blackbelt.

Newton says, “Even though i stay busy with school and extra curriculars, I wouldn't make it without a social life.  I love just getting together with a bunch of people and watching a movie, or playing a board game.”

He says that some of his favorite books and authors include anything by John Green (Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns, Abundance of Katherines, Will Grayson Will Grayson) and Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowliing.

His favorite Quotations are:

"I go to seek a Great Perhaps" — Francois Rabelais (They were his dying words, major theme in Looking for Alaska)

"If your life sucks, it's probably because you suck." — Josh Shipp (one of my favorites.  I've just always been a supporter of the "happiness is a choice/attitude" idea.  And this really embodies that."

Newton says that he decided to work with the “Item” because, “ thought writing about our school for the Picayune Item, from both a Student Council and Newspaper perspective, would be a great idea.  Everyone likes to know what their town youth is up to, and I felt like I could do a good job informing the community about what's going on about PMHS.”

He says, “In college I plan to pursue a degree in public policy and international relations, and then possibly law school.  My ideal job would be working in something political, CIA, or for the embassy.”

Be looking for Newton’s monthly column about the happenings at PMHS in the Education page of the Picayune Item.

  • Back home in high school with memories of the summer

    By Dr. Stanley Watson/Syndicated columnist
Before I hardly realized it the summer was ending and school would be starting soon. It never occurred to me to attend school any place besides Randlett. I was impatient to get back with the gang - my kind of people. I left California with a somewhat slanted view of that state. I was no doubt biased because of my limited social contacts. Also, on a few occasions I had been exposed to the bias of Californians against "Okies".
