PICAYUNE — At the 83rd Annual Conference of the National Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century, held in Washington D.C. in April, Juanita Loveless Gex of Picayune was elected President General.

The Society is a patriotic, genealogical and heraldic Society comprised of members who are able to trace their ancestors in this country to the founders who settled the thirteen original colonies before 1701.

The Society’s 11,000 plus members share a common interest in American history, love of and respect for our nation, and a desire to work together in harmonious fellowship to achieve the important goals listed in teh object of the Society.

Gex is a native of Picayune and a descendant of Capt. Hugh Norvell of Williamsburg, Va. She has served in several offices, including State President, and on the national level as Museum Chairman, Recording Secretary General, Corresponding Secretary General, Third Vice President General, and First Vice President General. She completed a 38-year career with the Mississippi State Employement Service, retiring as Employment Interviewer. She has been a volunteer teacher of a physical fitness program and is an active member of the Senior Center, sserving as Secretary of the Board of Directors.

She is a member of the Daughters of American Revolution and Magna Carta Dames. Most of her research was done by her late husband, who love genealogy and history, and was always an admirer of Colonial Dames ladies and their endeavors. She has two sons, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Historic painting donated to museum Descendants of Eliza Jane Poitevant and George Nicholson, Jerry K. Nicholson and his son George, visited Picayune last week to bring a painting of historical significance as a donation to the Lower Pearl River Valley Museum located at the Intermodal Transportation and Tourism Center.

Grammy winning guitarist and composer, visits Picayune Andrew York, classical guitar great and brother of Picayune resident, Theresa Dischinger will be in town today. The world renowned Grammy winner, will be coming through to visit his sister and soak up a little local flavor, says Dischinger. “He has such a hectic schedule; this will be a nice rest for him after teaching a Masters Class in Pensacola, Fla.,” she says.
