PICAYUNE —
Descendants of Eliza Jane Poitevant and George Nicholson, Jerry K. Nicholson and his son George, visited Picayune last week to bring a painting of historical significance as a donation to the Lower Pearl River Valley Museum located at the Intermodal Transportation and Tourism Center.
“Until my visit of Picayune, I didn’t know much about my family genealogy. I did grow up knowing that I was a descendant of Eliza Jane Nicholson, who was the publisher of Times Picayune”, says Geroge Nicholson.
The men, who now live in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., came through on a two fold mission on their way to a family plantation in Leavonia, La.
Jerry K. Nicholson said, “We came through for two reasons. Our first purpose was to donate the painting to the museum but we also wanted to go to Palestine Cemetery, where my mother and father are buried.”
When asked what the catalyst for the donation was, George explained, “I was given the painting from my aunt Elizabeth who was another relative (a descendant of York Nicholson). She gave it to me because I was named after him. I was really young at the time she gave it to me, so I didn’t get the full significance of the gesture until much later in life. As I got older, I knew I wanted to donate it someplace where it would be seen and appreciated. We felt that Picayune would be the perfect place to achieve that.
“I think Picayune is an absolutely lovely, place. I plan on visiting again,” George Nicholson said.
His father Jerry agreed, “It is a delightful little town with good food. It made me feel like I was back home. The one regret that I have is I never got to know my grandparents because they died when my father was 15. When I would ask him about them, he really didn’t know a whole lot. I learned much about my family while I was in Picayune. I would love to see the Hermitage if I had the chance.”
City Manager, Jim Luke said of the donation, “We are very excited to have this piece of history from our past. We are extremely grateful and appreciative to the Nicholson family for the donation of such historical significance to the museum. It will remain at the Intermodal Transportation and Tourist Center for the entire community to enjoy.
“This is another example of how we are trying to preserve the history of our city and county for future generations.”
