PICAYUNE —
The Pearl River County SPCA, located at 1700 Palestine Road, achieved many milestones in 2011. Among them were increased adoptions, expansion and upgrades of both dog and cat exercise areas, as well as a successful spay/neuter campaign.
Shelter President, Maria Diamond, says, “Last year the shelter took in 4,165 animals and adopted out 932 of them. Our adoptions have increased due to expanded publicity and several new programs we have where we have adoption specials every day of the week.
“Media getting the news out, such as the ‘Picayune Item Pet of the Week’ spot and the monthly full page that features our adoptable pets, makes a difference.
“We are always looking for new outlets for adoption. In 2011, 293 pets were adopted through the Slidell, La. PetSmart. Another blessing was being accepted into the PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ program. Our shelter had 350 dogs and puppies relocated to the northern United States through the Rescue Waggin’ program for adoption. Our adoptable pets are on www.petfinder.com, www.petango.com and www.adopt-a-pet.com.”
The shelter has received grants which allowed it to upgrade the exercise areas for both the cats and dogs.
Diamond says, “The grants were intended to make the shelter a healthier and more pleasant place for the animals, visitors and staff. We feel we have succeeded. The dogs are thoroughly enjoying the new play and exercise areas and the cats absolutely love their new outdoor enclosed playground. We plan to continue to expand and remodel as funding becomes available.”
The SPCA offers programs in addtion to operating the shelter.
“Thanks to the support of our community, local veterinarians and our low cost spay/neuter program, we have reduced our yearly intake of animals by 1,320 and ooureuthanasia by 1,000 since 2009. We offer coupons for the services to make the spay/neuter program affordable for everyone,” Diamond says.
“We also offer a food distribution for those pet owners in need and our Pet Partners group takes well behaved pets to local nursing homes. We also present humane education programs in schools and libraries. We assist in animal cruelty and abandonment cases and we are working with statewide groups to improve animal welfare laws in our state.”
Those who are interested in volunteering or learning more about the shelter can visit their website at www.prcspca.org. Diamond says the adoptable pet list is updated daily. Shelter business hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday. The Pearl River County SPCA can be reached by calling 601-798-8000.
She also invites visitors to join the monthly SPCA meeting held on the third Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., which is located at 157 Tennyson Cove.
