PICAYUNE —
Pat Richardson's 4th grade Union Baptist Academy class took a field trip to the Intermodal Transportaion and Tourism Center to expand on their current history, state and local government curriculum.
Students had the opportunity to speak with Mayor Ed Pinero about local government. Then they had a lesson about safety from Officer Boutte of the Picayune Police Department. Boutte spoke about seat belt safety and putting safety first.
Firemen Ricky Saul and Chris Campbell of the Picayune Fire Department then spoke with students about fire safety and what to do in a fire situation. They urged the not to hide when in a fire but crawl out of house. They demonstrated putting on their gear n shields for their protection.
City Grants Developer and Retirement Coordinator Christy Goss said, “The students loved touching and handling the gear. The total weight is 75 pounds. After the special guests spoke, we took them out to see the the SR railroad marker as well as the last Crosby chemical tank car located outside the intermodal n tourist center. We then walked to the Shay engine and saw two trains pass.
“Back inside the Intermodal students toured the Lower Pearl River Valley Transportation Museum. Inside the museum, the kids learned about beginning of Picayune. They were amazed at how transportation began with the Boley Creek, then the railroad and now they use the interstate.”
Goss said of the visit, “I don't know who was more excited about the field trip, me or the students. If any group or school would like to schedule a field trip please contact me at the Intermodal Transportation and Tourism Center at 601-798-9079.”

Spring is now in full swing at the Crosby Arboretum, and the show is well on its way toward a crescendo. The blooms of native purple Iris can be seen along the edge of the Piney Woods pond, pink “honeysuckle” azalea is flowering near the Pinecote Pavilion, and the yellow blooms of the pitcher plants — called “buttercups” by local residents — are beginning to carpet the south Savanna Exhibit.

Lamont Rowlands house important to historical heritage
Pat Crosby first moved to the Lamont Rowlands house in 1992.
Although she found the home in disrepair, she couldn’t imagine not living there and knew that was her new home.
“It just spoke to me, and it still does,” said Crosby, the wife of the late Tommy Crosby, son of R.H. Crosby. Tommy Crosby completely renovated the home and grounds. -
Pearl River County Arts League Art Show and Sale
Pearl River County Arts League Art Show and Sale will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 24, from noon till 4 p.m. at The Knights of Columbus Hall, 408 Carroll Drive. The show is open to all artists and admission is free to the public.
