2013 Krewe of the Pearl Ball a class act

PICAYUNE — The Krewe of the Pearl honored their King and Queen, Ted and Lynne Barze’, on Saturday evening at Southern Char Steak House with its first Mardi Gras Ball. The theme was “Puttin on the Ritz;” the evening’s   entertainment was provided by X-Finity Dance and Harvey Jesus and Fire.

Guests entered Southern Char Steak House on a path created with a red carpet and a large silhouette of a dancer by the door. There were silhouette dancers throughout the venue and the table decor featured real roses in hues of green, gold and purple.

The Court was presented to guests, followed by the King and Queen, who were followed by past Kings and Queens of the Krewe of Roses. The King and Queen were toasted and the festivities began.

Picayune Mayor Ed Pinero said of the event, “The ball was an outstanding event enjoyed by all who attended. I am excited to see the Mardi Gras festivities rolling again in Picayune. What a great event!”

“We all really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to next year. Everyone looked amazing,” Chamber Director and Co- Captain April Lovelace said of the event.

Greater Picayune Arts Council President Jodi Marze said, “GPAC is very happy to have had the opportunity to share in the organization of this event with the Greater Area Picayune Chamber of Commerce. Through our Art Council members like Co-Captain Mary Ellen Wheat, E.Jae James and Carolyn Terry, past queens from the Krewe of Roses and the generosity of local businessmen like Tim Hart and Buddy McDonald, we put on an event that we believe the community truly enjoyed.”

John Pigott said of the event, “The event was a great joint effort between the Chamber of Commerce and Greater Picayune Arts Council. It excelled and will be a great building block for future events in our area. It is wonderful for our area to have such an opportunity for celebrate Mardi Gras.”

Proceeds from the event will go back into the community through arts programs and local business support programs.

  • Vocability Words can set a tone for a situation, alter someone’s perception of an individual or group — in short, there is power in them. The Bible cautions, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” — Proverbs in 18:21, ASB. With that in mind, I will be focusing on words, some recently used and some obscure, to test the readers and build on what you already know. There will be theme weeks, for instance next week will focus on words involving wine — for no particular reason! So try your vocabulary skills with the following and see how you score. I’m always open to suggestions for material.

Every spring the home gardener is bombarded with new and improved petunias for the garden and landscape, making it hard to decide which to bring home from the garden center. In my opinion, you simply can’t go wrong selecting any of the Supertunias.
