PICAYUNE —
City Manager Jim Luke held a meeting Monday the 14th to discuss the grand opening of the newly constructed ADA compliant City Hall on Goodyear Boulevard.
The target date for the celebration will be held on May 3rd, exactly 75 years from the date of the grand opening of the historic City Hall in 1937. The event will follow the agenda for the original City Hall opening and Luke announced that Governor Bryant has confirmed he will be present for the event.
Luke announced there will be a new fountain installed which will feature a two tier spray with programmable color scheme. This fountain, Luke said, was donated by Hensley Lee and also funded by the sale of city scrap metal. Four benches will be installed around the fountain.
The Picayune Rotary Club will be donating a large clock, for the site, which will have a plaque attached acknowledging their donation. The city will be installing ten nostalgic lights around both the new and old city hall. New street signs are designated to be installed throughout the historic section.
It has been confirmed by the Greater Picayune Arts League (GPAC) that there will be an art show with the Pearl River County Arts League. The Civic Woman’s Club of Picayune are also working on the event. In the original program of 1937 the Woman’s Club held an art exhibit and flower show.
Luke is asking for anyone with photos of either the historic City Hall or Goodyear Boulevard, from the 1930s to 50s era, to share to contact City Hall at 601-798-9770. His hope is that the building will be full of enlarged photographs of Picayune’s past.
This meeting was the first of many to come on this topic;hopes for community involvement and suggestions are high.

The blooms of native purple Iris can be seen along the edge of the Piney Woods pond, pink “honeysuckle” azalea is flowering near the Pinecote Pavilion, and the yellow blooms of the pitcher plants — called “buttercups” by local residents — are beginning to carpet the south Savanna Exhibit.

Lamont Rowlands house important to historical heritage
Pat Crosby first moved to the Lamont Rowlands house in 1992.
Although she found the home in disrepair, she couldn’t imagine not living there and knew that was her new home.
“It just spoke to me, and it still does,” said Crosby, the wife of the late Tommy Crosby, son of R.H. Crosby. Tommy Crosby completely renovated the home and grounds. -
Pearl River County Arts League Art Show and Sale
Pearl River County Arts League Art Show and Sale will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 24, from noon till 4 p.m. at The Knights of Columbus Hall, 408 Carroll Drive. The show is open to all artists and admission is free to the public.
