Greer’s “Apples for Students”community initiative

POPLARVILLE — Greer's announced the results of its 2011-12 Apples for the Students community school initiative along with the dates for this year's program. The goal of the Apples for the Students program is to turn Greer's register tape receipts of local residents into FREE latest technology items, musical instruments, athletic equipment, academic supplies and much more for the benefit of participating area schools and non-profit organizations. All public, private, parochial, church schools and non-profit groups in the community are eligible to participate.

The 2012-13 Apples for the Students community school initiative kicks off September 1st with DOUBLE CREDIT DAY and runs through March 31, 2013. Greer's register receipts will be doubled on Saturday, September 1st! With all schools facing cutbacks, community support is needed more than ever. The goal of the program is to turn the Greer's Market and Greer's Food Tiger register receipts of local residents for grocery items, fresh produce, top quality meats, breakfast goodies, toiletries and other purchases into FREE musical instruments, athletic equipment, video cameras, DVD Recorders, iPads, Laptops, and hundreds of additional items from the Award Catalog like classroom sets for math, reading, science, etc. and supplies for the benefit of area schools.

“We are once again teaming up with Apples for the Students and the Schools to help our children make the grade in these financially challenging times,” said Jackie Greer, Jr., Vice President of Greer's. “This is our fourth year to offer the Apples program. Every time one of our shoppers sends their register tapes to a school registered in the program they earn that school credits toward the FREE exchange of over 1000 valuable educational products. Greer's is answering the call for our kids, so do your shopping at Greer's where everything you spend goes to help educate our children,” Mr. Greer encouraged. “Save your Greer's receipts and turn them in to your school! It's just that simple,” Greer went on to say. “Schools signing up by October 1st will receive 5,000 bonus credits; winners of the Collection Box Contest will receive 10,000 bonus credits; and schools depositing $75,000 in register receipts by November 30, 2012, will receive a $10,000 Receipt Value Bonus!”

For over 20 years Apples for the Students has worked with grocery stores throughout the United States providing over $250 million dollars of FREE computers, equipment, books and educational tools to local schools. The Apples program received the Presidential C-Flag Award Winning designation.

“Greer's was founded in 1916 by our great-grandfather and has been family-owned and operated for 96 years. We currently have 29 stores and are training 5th generation family members. Our Greer's vision is, To bring added joy, well-being and value to people's lives! Our mission includes five parts with one being community involvement. We all agreed that the Apples for the Students program is perfectly aligned with both our vision and mission. Partnering with our schools and customers gives us many opportunities to bring added joy, well-being and value to people's lives. The Apples program also gives us the opportunity to provide FREE educational assistance making a positive impact in the local schools in the communities we have served for nearly 100 years!” Jan Greer Endfinger said. “This is our fourth year to partner with local schools, day care centers, and non-profit organizations through Apples for the Students which is exclusively offered at Greer's Markets and Greer's Food Tiger grocery stores in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida,” added Mrs. Endfinger, Director of Marketing. “This year each store has chosen an Apple Cheerleader who will be available to assist school coordinators with promotions, collecting and tabulating receipts turned in by the community to the schools and getting them mailed to Apples for the Students headquarters,” Ms. Endfinger added.

Many students have jobs or extracurricular school activities, such as band or athletics, to help round out the day. However, those not in falling into these categories often ended up with a lot of free time; fortunately policy makers in Mississippi are finding ways to assist these students.
