PICAYUNE —
January is typically an off-peak month for hotels and tourism but January 2012 has been an exception for Picayune thanks to both the rival Alabama vs. LSU game and especially the 2012 Anglican Synod held by the Diocese of the Eastern United States, which was hosted by St. Barnabas Anglican Church.
The Senate was held at the Holiday Inn Express Picayune — Stennis Space Center and according to management sold out the hotel in rooms as well as utilized the meeting and banquet rooms.
“We were thrilled to have these wonderful people as our guests,” said Jeaux Favaloro, manager.
“St. Barnabas choosing us to host this event enabled us to sell out; we picked up 60 rooms and booked both meeting and banquet rooms. This was not anticipated for a month like January. It is typically off peak and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to host the Anglican Senate.”
This event was not just important to the Holiday Inn Express, local restaurants and downtown shops saw increased traffic from the tourists and resulting sales. The group also toured the Crosby Arboretum.
Increased tourism is something that Picayune has been working on and seems to be achieving. Centrally located to larger cities, offering competitively priced food and unique merchandise with a safe, home town experience, Picayune offers much to the weary traveler.
Favaloro said, “We are seeing growth and it is exciting to be gaining market share in a time when so many are losing ground. We are in the right place and doing the right things by aggressively marketing and attaching ourselves to Stennis and Picayune.
“As we and other businesses in Picayune get the word out that we have lots to offer as a destination location, good things will happen here.”
