PICAYUNE —
The National Weather Service said that a Flash Flood Warning was set to expire at noon on Friday, but weather and local emergency officials said Pearl River County residents should brace themselves for some flooding, generated by heavy rains from a slow moving cold front that transited the Pearl River County and South Mississippi region Wednesday and Thursday and forecast to continue to move out on Friday.
Weather forecasters say the system should work its way through the region by the weekend, which is forecast to be sunny and warm. The problem with the system was that its movement was slow, and it dropped torrents of rain on the area, said Pearl River County Emergency Management Director Danny Manley.
Mainly said his personnel were monitoring the situation hourly.
County officials said the real problem with flooding is that the worse usually occurs after the system passes, since East and West Hobolochitto creeks will receive runoff from almost the entire Pearl River County watershed north of Picayune. The creeks drain the entire northern section of the county, and conjoin in Picayune to form the Hobolochitto Creek, which flows into East Pearl River.
When heavy rains cause the creeks to overflow, it backs up streams and ditches that flow into the creeks, causing flooding in neighborhoods and subdivisions that are near the creeks.
Officials were expecting on Thursday for the creeks to top, by one foot, their flood stages of 15 feet, but with the additional heavy rains on Thursday, that is expected to change.
Already by early Thursday morning county officials had reports from residents in some rural subdivisions about light flooding, and were hoping it would not get any worse.
But the cold front was moving so slowly that officials were worried that heavy rains from the system could produce some severe flooding in some low-lying areas.
Some areas were expecting five-to-six inches of rain over the three-day period it will take for the front to clear South Mississippi.
Officials were especially worried about some streets in East Picayune and the Raven Wood subdivision near Alligator Branch between Nicholson and Picayune.
Officials were also afraid they might have to shut down the Sones Chapel Road again after opening it to traffic between McNeill and Millard this week at Double Branch, where a bridge replacement project is occurring.
County Engineer Les Dungan told supervisors on Wednesday that the section under repair was graveled to allow light traffic through in preparation for the paving that section, but that it could be closed again if heavy rains hit the area.
Closure of the road causes long detours for residents who live north of the bridge project at Double Branch.

Pope Benedict VXI resigning
VATICAN CITY (AP) — With a few words in Latin, Pope Benedict VXI did Monday what no pope has done in more than half a millennium, announcing his resignation and sending the already troubled Catholic Church scrambling to replace the leader of its 1 billion followers by Easter.
Not even his closest associates had advance word of the news, a bombshell that he dropped during a routine morning meeting of Vatican cardinals. With no clear favorites to succeed him, another surprise likely awaits when the cardinals elect Benedict’s successor next month.
“Without doubt this is a historic moment,” said Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, a protege and former theology student of Benedict’s who is considered a papal contender. “Right now, 1.2 billion Catholics the world over are holding their breath.” -
