SASSAFRAS LEAVES — The leaves of the sassafras tree come in three shapes. One is a single oval, the other is a thumbed mitt and the third is more like an old baseball mitt with a a thumb, the two middle fingers contained in one enclosure and the two outside fingers contained in a third. All three leaf shapes are found on mature trees. The mature tree also has deeply fissured dark red, or burnt umber, colored bark.
