Eliza’s would be killer, Jennie Bronson, was found not guilty. This seems a travesty of justice, but considering the Reconstruction jury pool (mostly freed slaves and northern radicals); the stature of Jennie Bronson, a beautiful runway model type; the lack of support by Holbrook; and Eliza’s quiet demeanor and fear of the “woman’s” wrath, one is greatly disappointed, but not surprised. Eliza bounced back from this setback to take over and turn around the heavily indebted and failing newspaper that her husband had left her, upon his death.
