EXTERNAL TANK — The last external tank, No. 138, rolls out at Michoud’s Lockheed-Martin works on July 8. There was a celebration, and tears, too. The tank was immediately shipped to Kennedy Space Center for the Space Shuttle’s last fight on Feb. 26. Lockheed-Martin will now wind down its External Tank manufacturing operation at Michoud, which once employed 2,000. The Space Shuttle program began in the early 1970s.
