SINKING SURVIVOR

Henry Chaisson was 17 in his boot camp graduation photo at right, and still only 17 when he was assigned to the destroyer, the USS Aaron Ward and when it sunk by Japanese bombs in Iron Bottom Bay off the coast of Guadacanal. The young sailor saw the body of a friend who had been cut in half during the bombing floating in the sea as he was trying to make up his mind to abandon ship by jumping into the water. In the photo below, he sits with his wife of 67 years, Olga, in the home they moved to after being chased out of Chalmette, La., by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
