Hickman, Lady Hornets unbeaten

Rachel Hickman tossed a no-hitter as Poplarville remained unbeaten with an 11-0 shutout of visiting Pearl River Central Monday night.

The Lady Hornets are now 0-4 on the year, while the Lady Devils dropped to 0-3. Poplarville is back in action tonight, on the road at Stone County.

Hickman struck out 13 in the commanding performance. The game was called after five innings. She was also solid at the plate, smacking a pair of triples and a double and driving in two runs.

Tori Fairchild also had a triple and a single in the win, while Kristen Herndon had a pair of hits and drove in a run and Tristan Wheat had an RBI-double.

The Lady Hornets kicked off the season with  pair of wins in the Purvis Tournament, beating Quitman 8-2 and the host team 7-2. Hickman, who is also 4-0, got both wins, striking out 13 against Quitman and 11 against Purvis.

Hickman also had three doubles on the day, and Wheat smacked a home run.

The Lady Hornets beat Stone last week 8-2, as Hickman struck out 15 batters. Wheat collected four hits in the game, including a triple, and Breanna Herndon added a triple to the winning effort as well. Fairchild also had a double.

After playing Stone tonight, Poplarville plays in the Harrison Central Tournament Friday facing Ocean Springs at 4:30 p.m., and HCHS at 7.

The Lady Devils opened the season with a pair of losses over the weekend, falling to OLA and Purvis.

* In other local fast-pitch action, St.Patrick beat Picayune 7-0 Tuesday. The Lady Tide dropped to 2-3 with the loss, and will host Pass Christian tonight.

The Lady Tide will also compete in the Stone County Tournament on Saturday.
